The New Album by Electric Gypsy Takes You To An Alappuzha Like No Other

Imagine a blend of Country Rock and Blues music amidst the picturesque greenery of Alappuzha. Not something your mind can fabricate? Don’t worry, Kochi-based band Electric Gypsy has you covered!

Electric Gypsy has recently released their rock opera titled Dragoons Wander at Night, their attempt to take their listeners to Alappuzha and narrate a story as if it is a muthassikadha. The overarching story talks of a fictional town that is plagued by a fun-loving mystical creature. Through the course of their album, they reveal the Dragoon to be a lonely person seeking love and belonging like the rest of us.

Nahaz Ravi, the vocalist and guitarist of Electric Gypsy, developed the story. He then sat with the rest of the band – drummer Krishnadas and bass guitarist Manu Ajayan – to breathe music into this fable. The album was mixed and mastered by Sujith VV. The orchestration was done by Sabarish Menon. The album also features singer Amata Bob in the song Magnolia’s Sugarcane Ranch.

As a band passionate about music, they believe in “inclusivity and the importance of curiosity while observing the fast-paced world around us.” Through their music, they intend to inculcate an imaginative mindset and infinite possibilities of expression in their listeners. A listen to Dragoons Wander at Night will make it amply clear to the listener that these are not lofty ideas but something Electric Gypsy puts into action through music that captures rural Alappuzha in a way that was, until now, left unimagined.

Nahaz told us, “Personally, this album resonates with my childhood memories in my hometown of Allapuzha. There are songs about frog-catching sessions with my cousin, braving the flood and many more experiences from the rural town of Kollakadavu. These memories are combined with a fictional narrative to bring forth something surreal rooted in reality.”

These personal themes when combined with field-recorded sounds of footsteps, wind and frogs give this album a unique voice. With the videos of the songs Farmland Blues and Frog Catchers scheduled for release soon, we can’t wait to see how these magical tales will be visualised. The video for Farmland Blues was directed by Down Trodden.
