Kerala: Peacock Hits Man On Bike, Bird & Man Dies

Who knew that a peacock could turn out to be lethal for travellers? In a really unfortunate incident, a peacock and a biker died due to a clash in Thrissur’s Ayyanthole. Here’s what really happened.

A 34-year-old Kerala man (Pramod) was riding his bike along with his wife (Veena). As he was riding, a peacock came out of nowhere, hit the biker, who then lost balance and hit a wall. Pramod was gravely injured and taken to the hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away. The peacock, however, died on the spot. Veena was the only one who survived the crash, even though she sustained injuries too.

The couple had just gotten married four months ago.

P.O. Nameer (Head of Centre for Wildlife Studies, College of Forestry, Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur) shared that the rise of the Peafowl population in Kerala is due to climate change. One of the bioindicators of environmental change can be predicted with the change in bird population and their habitats.

Peacocks hold a national status in the country. That’s one of the main reasons why people refrain from killing it. It is also illegal to have its meat. It is predicted that the peafowl habitat area will increase from 19.15 % to 41.44% and 55.33% by 2050 in Kerala.
