Kerala has geared up to reinvent its students’ learning environments and experience with the prospective implementation of ‘bag-free days’. The decision is a direct response to growing concerns about the excessive weight of school backpacks, an issue that has been impacting children’s physical and mental health.
Education Minister V . Sivankutty has acknowledged the increasing distress caused by this burden. Despite prior solutions like breaking textbooks into two parts, the issue remains unresolved. To combat this, the Government intends to impose strict rules, restricting the weight of school backpacks to 1.6-2.2 kg for Class 1 kids and 2.5-4.5 kg for Class 10.

Apart from weight limitations, the State is planning to introduce ‘bag-free days’ at least four times every month. The new approach intends to create a more holistic and engaging learning environment by minimizing physical strain on students while fostering a deeper connection to subjects through hands-on activities and experiential learning. The potential benefits of ‘bag-free days’ extend beyond physical well-being. The State expects reduced stress levels, increased focus, and a deeper appreciation for experiential learning to be the outcomes. Moreover, it offers an opportunity for schools to explore innovative teaching methodologies and create a more engaging learning environment.
Kerala’s program, which aligns with the emphasis on experiential learning in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, is a step toward a more comprehensive education system. By focusing on the children’s physical and emotional well-being, the State is paving the path for a more vibrant and meaningful learning experience for its young learners.
While the final decision is anticipated, the initiative has received significant support, with both parents and educators applauding the move. As Kerala moves toward establishing ‘bag-free days’, it sets a precedent for other Governments to follow in prioritising student well-being and altering the conventional learning setting.
