There are Malayalam movies and then there are great Malayalam movies that don’t receive the praise they deserve. While the Mollywood industry is known to churn out great content, there are some that go unnoticed. And since Netflix is our go-to digital content platform, we decided to list down five off-beat Malayalam movies on Netflix that have earned a place in our ‘Best Malayalam Movie’ wall of fame. Even if you don’t know the language, you should give these movies a try because they will entertain you as much as the commercial movies do.
Eeda (2018)
The story of a couple who fall in love despite their families believing in different political ideologies is truly riveting. The movie is based on their struggles to live a peaceful life without being affected by their families age-old political rivalry. Shane and Nimisha have done great job dismantling their politics solely based on their love for each other. By the end, you will find yourself having a better perspective about Kerala’s political violence. There’s something in here for everyone.
Swathanthram Ardharathriyil (2018)
We can’t even begin to say how much we loved watching this movie. The storyline revolves around a tight knit group of prisoners who plan their escape from jail meticulously because of one particular guy. You’ll have a great time watching Swathanthram Ardharathriyil because it keeps you hooked on till the very end. Will their escape plan work? Watch to find out.
Ottal (2014)
When you truly love someone, wouldn’t you miss them dearly when you’re not with them? Well, Ottal captures this very exact feeling of nostalgia and the bond between a boy and his grandfather. Set in the milieu of a village in Kuttanad, the story is of a boy who ends up in a firecracker factory and how he wants his grandfather to take him back, unaware that his grandfather is dead. It has the most exhilarating storyline we’ve even seen. The dialogue structure, portrayal of emotions, and the poetic symbolism in the movie will keep you wanting for more. Make sure that you have a box of tissues handy.
Shavam (2015)
The 63-minute long dark comedy film won the Best Foreign Film Award at the Barni International Festival. The entire movie is shot in black and white and it is based on the death of a man from a middle-class catholic family. More than the death, the movie talks about the people who’ve attended his funeral. The movie does everything it can to pierce the nuances of Malayali’s behaviour during a funeral. The concept is simple yet completely engrossing.
Kanyaka Talkies (2013)
A theatre knowns for screen soft porn is turned into a church. Yes, Kanyaka Talkies talks of religion and sex and how our very understanding of it can change based on people’s perception. What starts off as seemingly weird ends up being a brilliant take on voyeurism and guilt. Now, what unravels after the holy transformation will keep you glued to the screens. This is one movie that shouldn’t slip any Malayalam movie lover’s radar.
