Don’t we all just love Niram? Recently, I decided to watch it again, just to relive the joy I experienced as a young person. To my surprise, I noticed some things that I had never noticed before. I couldn’t resist sharing this newfound knowledge with you.
Care-free Chackochan
Chackochan, as Aby, never felt so… loose. So carefree. He was such a stark contrast to Sudhi, who felt like he was holding his breath half the time while talking in prose. Aby felt like someone you’d seen in college or even a cousin – with the hypermeter turned up to 10. But look at this scene where they’re not even the centre of focus. I’d never noticed it before, and I simply love the crazy, ridiculous chemistry and comfort both the actors share. How I wish we could see them together on screen again.

Sona-Rukku’s impromptu dance
I love this scene because this is something I think most girls do all the time. We used to do this in our hostel and my sisters and I do it too sometimes – just break into a waltz while having some mundane conversation. It felt so nice seeing that on-screen again, making the characters feel like someone you’d know. I wonder how someone like Kamal was able to picture a scene like that – maybe he too does it with his siblings.
Devan’s voice transfer
Now, Devji is a cult personality today, thanks to Appuppan and the Boys and everything he does or says will, of course, be scrutinized. Check out Devan’s voice in this particular scene. Pullike pettan jaladhosham pidicho? Sounds like a kanji kudikaan maranna Devji’s voice.

Note: Also, Devji’s dance during Shukriya gives me joy, as very few things in life do.
Wtf is an ethirikapatti molaga bajji?
Why on earth does Sona like Prakash?
Prakash is literally one of the most flavourless characters in Niram, filled with ultra-energetic people. Why on earth does Sona even consider saying yes to him? They hardly spent any time together. They literally have nothing in common. At one point, she voices her fear to Aby that she’s afraid that she might get bored of her relationship after sometime. With Prakash, that is definitely a possibility.

And what is with that valicha chiri he has while watching an Ajay Devgn stunt sequence in some random dookli movie? I don’t blame Sona for walking out of the theatre.
And this fellow even brings over his ammama to Sona’s house with absolutely no prior notice like two days after she accepts his proposal. To ask for her hand before she has a chance to even soojipikkal ito her parents. While she is still in college! WTF bro!
The best “love realization” song sequence
Mizhiariyathe in Niram is undoubtedly one of the best love songs ever made. But you’ve got to admit that the visuals are hilarious. It’s like Aby decided to go to a mall right away and then proceeded to sing his heart out while doing a bit of shopping.
He can be found in:
- a music store hugging Enrique Iglesias
- a bookstore (where he must have marich idalled every rack because there is a scene where he’s just sitting and smiling amidst a shit load of books scattered on the floor),
- clothes store doing stuff to mannequins
- Literally lying on top of shoes in the shoe store
- Games arcade (with my personal favourite shot of him playing billiard while lying on top of the billiards table)
- flower shop
- a home décor store – where he dirties their window
- and finally, a car showroom
All while singing some of the most romantic lyrics ever. Now as I think about it is actually genius. Because, where else would Aby, a college kid, be hanging out? He isn’t likely to travel to some remote location only to sing a song and have some love-sick thoughts when he probably has tons of things to do and college to attend. So, in retrospect, this song from Niram is one of the most realistic love songs ever, alle?
