Netflix’s Indian Adaptation Of Elite, ‘Class’ Has The Potential To Be A Gen Z Cult Show

The Netflix series Class is one of the most-talked shows in the high school thriller drama genre. Directed by Ashim Ahluwalia, Class is the adaptation of the Spanish cult series Elite. Set in the backdrop of an elite school in South Delhi, the film begins with an unusual murder scene of a girl, Suhani, which takes viewers back to where it all began.

A government school catches fire in unusual circumstances, leaving many suspicious. Three students from the school – Dheeraj Kumar Valmiki (played by Piyush Khati), Saba Manzoor (played by Madhyama Segal), and Balli Sehrawat (played by Cwaayal Singh) are shifted to Hampton International School with a scholarship. They are welcomed with class and casteist slurs by the “OG ” students of the school.

The series is narrated through each character’s statements to the cops, who are trying to join the jigsaw puzzle that led to Suhani’s murder.

Suhani Ahuja, (played by Anjali Sivaraman) is the heiress of the Ahuja Builders. She is an innocent rich brat who is mentally ill and is addicted to substance abuse. She shares a troubled bond with her family. And then there is Veer Ahuja, (played by Zeyn Shaw), her younger brother, who is always ready to bash his sister’s swindlers with his hockey sticks and luxury cars.

Initially, I found Veer as a snobbish, irritating guy who guards his sister everywhere. Contrary to my initial judgments, by the end of the season, we realize that Veer and Saba are the only sensible ones in the show.

Veer can’t be talked about without mentioning Yashika Mehta (played by Ayesha Kanga), his girlfriend, at the show’s beginning. Yashika appears as a shallow girl busy keeping up her social media influencer image. In reality, she is almost abandoned by her divorced parents.

It was refreshing to see a few genuine, unconventional romances. No cringe, no-nonsense, Dhruv Sanghvi (played by Chayan Chopra) and Faruq Manzoor (played by Chintaan Rachchh) gay romance was pure pleasure. Dhruv’s coming out was received with better understanding from his parents and friends. Throughout the series, Faruq seems to fear the day his Abu (father)  finds out about their relationship. Faruq frequently draws similarities between their relationship and all the gay relationships he has witnessed in his community. He dreads the day he will be thrown to the streets and assaulted. The makers perfectly portrayed the relevance of intersectionality in India through the Dhruv-Faruq romance.

The hottest guilty pleasure was the threesome romance among Balli, Koel Kalra (played by Naina Bhan), and Sharan Gujral (played by Moses Koul).

The style in Class is remarkable. Predicting who among the girls would be routed to the pop culture fashion icons list will be hard. The makers have announced the next season of the series. As more truths unveil, a special petition to feature more of Veer – Sabba “enemies turned lovers” romance. All thanks to Yashika!
