Movies In Which Mohanlal And Mammootty Came Together

Mammootty and Mohanlal – popularly referred to as the big Ms of Mollywood – have undisputedly remained the biggest superstars of the Malayalam movie industry. Though there have been disputes regarding their stardom, they don’t seem to be bothered by any of that. They always amaze the audience with their characters and movies. Also, the Malayali audience has been enthralled by the bond they share off-screen. But the audience always gets a thrilling experience when both of them share the screen space. The two being cast together has always been a hit at the box office.

Here is a list of such movies in which the big M’s came together:

Padayottam

Padayottam (1982) is the first film in which Mohanlal and Mammootty were cast together. It is the only movie in which Mammootty played the role of Mohanlal’s father and even a character with negative shades. Partly based on the novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, the film tells the story of Udayan (played by Prem Nazir), a young prince who comes to his hometown to avenge his uncle’s murder by killing all those who conspired against him.

Enthino Pookkunna Pookkal

Released in 1982, this family drama film stars Mohanlal and Mammootty, along with Ratheeesh and Zarina Wahab. It tells the story of a married couple who comes across another pair and spends some time with them. Soon, they realise that neither of them is in love with their spouses and decide to swap partners.

Avidathepole Ivideyum

Avidathepole Ivideyum is a 1985 film starring Mohanlal, Mammootty, Shobana, and Kavitha Thakur. The film tells the story of two friends who marry each other’s sisters. And they gradually face problems due to lifestyle differences.

Vartha

This 1986 film was one of the biggest hits of that year. The film tells the story of journalist Madhavankutty (played by Mammootty) who fights against the corrupt government. Mohanlal plays the role of Parol Vasu, which was among the very first roles in which he started twisting his moustache, for which he later became popular.

Ahimsa

This 1981 film talks about the Hindu-Muslim politics and conflicts in Kerala which were triggered by some of the feudal lords. The movie urges the audience to understand the importance of non-violence.

Narasimham

Narasimham was released in 2000. It brought in one of the most famous and powerful characters played by Mohanlal, Poovalli Induchoodan. The film tells the story of Induchoodan who was wrongly implicated in a murder case. When his father (played by Thilakan) is imprisoned for murdering his daughter, Induchoodan vows to prove his innocence. Mammootty appears as Adv. Nandagopan Marar (special cameo appearance), the defence lawyer. Mammootty’s dialogues during the court scene became a sensation at the time and retain their punch even on repeat viewings.

Harikrishnans

Harikrishnans is a 1998 film starring Mammootty and Mohanlal, whose characters have the same name. The duo plays the most famous lawyers in India, who investigate the murder of Gupthan, a college lecturer. The film received a huge pre-release hype due to the combined screen presence of the Big M’s. It became the highest-grossing film of that year.

No. 20 Madras Mail

No. 20 Madras Mail tells the story of Tony (played by Mohanlal) and his friends, who travel by train to Madras. On the journey, Tony falls for a girl. When the girl is found murdered the next day, he becomes the suspect. Mammootty appears as himself in a cameo appearance, who is also travelling in the same train.

Movies in which the big Ms came together, seem to be an attempt by filmmakers to satisfy the fan bases of both the actors. Also, such films have received very good responses in theatres. So which one of these was your favourite?
