Mountain Meets Sea: How Two Sisters-in-Law from Kannur Are Changing How We Travel

Mountain Meets Sea: How Two Sisters-in-Law from Kannur Are Changing How We Travel

There is something deeply reassuring about people who build businesses around what truly moves them. Mountain Meets Sea was born that way, through two sisters-in-law from Kannur who followed their curiosity toward the ocean and the mountains. They ditched their full-time jobs and decided to bring others along for the kind of travel that feels meaningful and worlds away from Instagram checklists.

Amrutha Jayachandran and Nishtha Chandran did not grow up as travellers. In fact, Amrutha did not feel connected to the sea at all. Her relationship with the ocean began unexpectedly during her school years. When she was in the 11th standard, she became friends (and had a teenage crush) with a deck cadet. “One day he told me about tiny sailboats crossing the Atlantic,” she says.“That was the first time I ever heard about sailing like that. I remember thinking, if he wants to do it someday, maybe I will too.” Amrutha went on to become a certified sailor, and the person who introduced her to the world of sailing eventually became her husband. Over time, the sea went from being unfamiliar to becoming an important part of her life.

Nishtha’s journey into adventure is a different story in itself. While living in Dubai, she was exposed, for the first time in her life, to a culture that encouraged outdoor movement and fitness. Cycling groups, hiking trails, fitness communities, and adventure sports soon became part of her everyday life. “Fitness changed my perspective,” she says. Curious by nature, she decided to try everything she could. Over time, the mountains became her anchor.“Nature, especially the mountains, grounded me,” she explains, which led her to complete a Basic Mountaineering Course. Along the way, she also started a fitness community in Dubai called Sweat Strong Dubai and launched her own active-wear brand.

Both women eventually reached a point where the traditional nine-to-five life no longer felt fulfilling. Amrutha gravitated toward the sea, while Nishtha felt most alive on trails and mountain paths. They travelled often, explored different terrains, and discovered places beyond the usual tourist routes. When their journeys crossed, they realised they shared the same approach to travel and the same desire to experience places deeply.

That shared mindset led to the birth of Mountain Meets Sea. It first began as a personal exploration and then evolved into a travel company focused on experiential travel and responsible tourism. Every trip they curate is shaped by their own time spent in these places, their interactions with locals, and their belief that travel should respect the land and its people.

Mountain Meets Sea avoids tourist clichés and predictable itineraries. They design trips for travellers who want more than just sightseeing. One of their upcoming trips in 2026 to the Philippines, for instance, includes whale shark watching, snorkelling with sardines, exploring Manila, and immersive local experiences. Their focus is on understanding the local pulse of a place rather than rushing through highlights.

They offer both group adventures and customised travel experiences for people who prefer to explore at their own pace, including solo trips. Beyond the adventure, they also use these journeys to encourage responsible travel, digital detox, and local tourism. Something as simple as picking up plastic on a trail or choosing a local meal over cooking becomes part of the experience, reminding travellers that how they travel matters as much as where they go. “We are different from other travel companies,” Amrutha says. They decide the rules, ensure that “fun” is always part of the plan, are open to exploring new routes, and encourage people to let loose.

Their upcoming travel plans for 2026 can be found on their Instagram highlights. If you want to experience the world in a way that feels honest and alive, you should probably give Mountains Meet Sea a chance.
