It has been 89 years since the release of Vigathakumaran. Malayalam cinema has had a difficult yet astonishing growth since. The golden age of Malayalam cinema is considered to be from 1980-1990, which is marked by the emergence of many brilliant directors and writers who churned out movies in different genres. It was during this era that Bharathan and Padmarajan ruled Malayalam cinema with movies like Vaisali and Rathinirvedam. Conclusively, many movies which changed the face of Mollywood were born in this era.
This was also the era that witnessed Malayalam cinema’s evergreen heroes like Mammootty and Mohanlal rising to power. It was also the time when many gifted actors like Jayaram, Shobhana, Sukumaran made their acting debut. We are past the golden age and now in the age of action heroes (1990-present). The movie industry has changed, the way of storytelling has evolved, and the entire ideology of cinema is transitioning but our beloved actors still hold a place in the industry (and our hearts).
Here is a list of our heroes who have aged gracefully.
Mammotty
Mammootty, the megastar, fits right into the title of an evergreen hero. He debuted in 1971, but the actual rise of Mammootty as an actor began from the mid ’80s with movies like Oru Vadakkan Veeragathaand and Mathilukal which earned him the national award for best actor. He is also nicknamed the ‘Face of Indian Cinema ‘.
He ruled the Malayalam cinema for four decades. He’s not only a passionate actor but also a highly disciplined person. It’s a common known fact that Mammootty follows a strict diet (except when it comes to mutton biryani). Mammootty is undoubtedly the most attractive male celebrity that Mollywood has to offer.
Mohanlal
Mohanlal, the complete actor and the personal pride of Malayalam cinema, celebrated his 59th birthday this May. He is yet another actor who seems to defy age. It’s been 41 years since his first movie. From a hot handsome playboy to the rich Royal hunk, Mohanlal has given us major fitness goals and how. If any actor who could play the Malayalam version of Don Corleone from the iconic movie The Godfather, all the Malayalis would agree in unison that it would be our Lalettan. Working out is Mohanlal’s favourite activity and that’s how he stays fit. Now you know where you can get you fitness inspiration from.
Lal
This actor-director is redefining the norms of age. He began his career as a mimicry artist with his childhood pal Siddique. This combo later teamed up and made their debut in the movie Ramji Rao Speaking, a cult classic. Lal made his entry into acting with Suresh Gopi’s Kaliyattam. Ever since, he has entertained us with roles like Sikkandar Singh, Dasappan, Dr Zacharia, Kalathiparambil Kalidasan, and so on.
He is one such celebrity who looks better with age. One thing to notice is that his fashion is on point. The image of him with the Bahubali fame Prabhas proves that he’s one of the most fashionable actors in this industry. He has aged in the most beautiful way possible.
Rahman
Rahman, the teenage idol and the young heartthrob of the ’90s is all set to enter in his mid ’50s and still looks as handsome as he did then. He’s probably got some incredible genes that keep him looking timeless. He began his film career at the age of 16. His debut movie Koodevide was a big hit. We still get nostalgic when we listen to songs “Aadi Vaa Katte” and “Poonkattinodum Kilikalodum “. The man made the entire state blush with his sweet innocent smile.
One lesser known fact about him is that he doesn’t enjoy going to a beauty salon. Of course, he doesn’t need to, he’s blessed with sexy looks. Even in his ‘50s, he still makes all the women swoon over him. This man turned out to be a lot sexier than he was in the ‘90s.
Jayaram
This 53-year-old charismatic actor was born on 10th December 1965. He started as a mimicry artist and
Biju Menon
He is one such actor who happens to be appealing at any age. He started as a television actor and later paved his way to Malayalam cinema. He is the kind of actor who blends in with any type of role. From Rajeevan in Meghamalhar, to Mahendra Varma in Mannar Mathai Speaking, and Uthaman in Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu, this actor carried all the roles effortlessly. For the past few years, he has been focusing more on the comedy genre and when asked about it, he said, “I want to make people laugh”. This 4- year-old seems to be getting younger every year!

Apart from acting, he is a philanthropist, social worker, and advocates for environmental protection. He is popularly known for his fearless police roles. His portrayal of a daring outspoken brave IPS officer was a treat to the audience and nevertheless, brought a sense of justice in the minds of the viewers. Suresh Gopi has aged in a graceful and sophisticated manner.
Krishnakumar
The father of 4 gorgeous girls is at his prime 51 and you wouldn’t believe his age even if he says it out loud. The actor doesn’t seem to get affected by the passage of time. He began his career as a TV newsreader and later switched to acting. He debuted with the 1994 Malayalam movie Kashmeeram. He is not a diet conscious person so all the credits for his timeless good looks go to his good genes, we guess. He loves working out, he is an outdoor person, and a lover of nature.
Vikram
Probably, he is the only non-Malayali actor in this list. Although his main industry is Tollywood, he had his share in Mollywood as well. He made his debut in 1990 in En Kadhal Kanmani. He is a highly talented actor and proved his worth with movies like Anniyan, Pithamagan, Ravanan, and Deiva Thirumagal. He is also a well-known philanthropist.
