5 Amma’s Homemade Skincare Remedies

Hey ya’ll, let’s face it, some of us aren’t born with glass textured, acne-free skin. I am a prime example. You see, in high school, I was so insecure about my scarred skin that I would cover my acne scars with foundation so that I could feel good about my skin. In fact, I didn’t go out with my friends for a good one year because I was afraid that people would judge me based on my skin. Damn, it was definitely a hard time. I did consider the medical route, but it didn’t make much of a difference. What did though, was my mother’s homemade skincare remedies that did wonders to my skin.

For those struggling with acne breakouts, flakness, skin discolouration, pigmentation, blackheads and whiteheads, maybe, these remedies can be the ultimate solution to your skin problems. But I must say, it took close to six months for my skin to completely recover, but trust me, the wait was totally worth it. I may still not have the ‘perfect skin’, but at least I’m happy that I don’t have acne scarring issues anymore, thanks to my mother’s remedial secrets.

1.The Turmeric Face Pack

I would make it a point to put a yogurt, honey, and turmeric face pack every day after school just to give it the right cleanse. Turmeric is great for all skin types and helps reduce acne scars and breakouts. Yogurt, on the other hand, helps remove the tan on your face, leaving you with supple skin. Honey, of course, has its own beneficial antioxidant properties that not only treats acne, but also slows down the skin aging process. Wash your face with lukewarm water after 20 minutes and voila, you’re good to go.

2. The Cinnamon Scrub

Every now and then, I would give my skin a good scrub to remove all the deeply rooted bacteria and dead skin. I would use a mixture of cinnamon powder and honey to gently scrub my face. Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that helps reduce acne spots on your face. See, you don’t have to buy expensive scrubs from the nearby supermarket when you make a natural, effective one at home.

3. The Coconut Oil Moisturiser

Back when I couldn’t afford to buy a moisturiser (only because I didn’t want to burden my mother), I used to use homemade coconut oil to moisturise my skin before I would hit the sheets. As soon as I was done taking a hot shower, I would use coconut oil all over my body. Not only did it heal all my wounds, it made my skin so soft. You can also bid goodbye to wrinkles too. However, for immediate results, do make sure that you use natural coconut oil and not the ones available in drug stores.

4. The Sunday Massage

Most of the people in Kerala make hair and body oil from scratch using natural ingredients. My mother was no different. She would meticulously craft the perfect oil like a potion she only knew how to make. And, she would make sure that I used the oil to massage my body every Sunday. It was a tradition that I’m glad I never said no to. Giving your body an oil massage will only improve the blood circulation in your body, which is needed if you want an improved body function. It indirectly helps solve your skin issues.

5. The Detox Remedy

What you put inside your body is also equally important. My mother made sure that I drank water with neem, lime, and a pinch of turmeric every single day as soon as I woke up. It was the perfect detox that helped clear all the impurities within my body. In fact, it also cleaned my digestive tract in the process.
